Eyedropper tool used outside of Photoshop

Eyedropper tool used outside of Photoshop

The eyedropper tool enables you to sample color from anywhere on your computer screen. If you can see the color, you can grab the color.

For years I’ve worked with a great little application called pixie which has its own little eye dropper tool, that does the trick, but its another application to load on top of the ram hungry photoshop!

Then one day i discovered that this is just as easy to perform from within photoshop if you have the know how.

Today i’m going to share that tip with you.

Firstly the letter I on your keyboard is the standard shortcut key to select the Eyedropper tool. Once selected then click-and-hold inside your document – you will see an eyedropper icon at this point.

In our screenshot example we are currently sampling the white page

Now for the eye dropper tip you need to remember:

While holding your left button on the mouse, drag your eyedropper outside the document window and onto the object you’d like to sample.
Only release your mouse button when you are clear you are sampling the correct colour

Take a look at your Photoshop color selecter and you should see your new color ready to go.

In the screenshot example we are selecting the blue from the PS icon on our toolbar (outside of the Photoshop Application)

Recent Photoshop Files

Recent Photoshop Files
I love my applications that know what file i last opened. Most Adobe applications have this useful shortcut via the file menu.
If you are working with a lot of files, you’ll find that the default setting of remembering 10 of your last files may not be enough. Today we will look at how to increase the size from 10 to 20 files.
To see your current setting click on the top menu File > Open Recent
Recent Photoshop Files

Recent 10 Photoshop Files Only

To make the change to 20 or whatever number you prefer select Edit > Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences for Mac users)
Choose the File Handling option
Recent Photoshop Files Menu

Recent Photoshop Files Drop Down Menu

In the Recent File List Contains field which i’m now goinf to change from the default setting 10 to my preferred 20 of course you can specify how many files you would like it to remember.
There you have it, you are now able to access you last 20 files.

NAPP members get Beta CS5 Photoshop

NAPP members get Beta CS5 Photoshop

We all like special invites. They don’t get much bigger than the Adobe invites going out at the moment. If you are a NAPP (the National Association of Photoshop Professionals) member, you may well receive an invitation to beta test the next generation Adobe software. The invites are going out vie email, so keep an eye on your inbox.

Its really good to see Adobe look for feedback before a final release and to give that honor to NAPP members is a great testiment to both Adobe and NAPP.

NAPP members get Beta CS5 Photoshop

NAPP members get Beta CS5 Photoshop

This special invite is similar to the Google and Microsoft approach. Adobe are giving some members of NAPP the dream ticket “become private Beta testers of the next version of Adobe Photoshop”

CS5 Beta Testers

According to Scott Kelby “Members who are invited to become Beta testers have to complete a non-disclosure agreement, and agree to abide by Adobe’s testing procedures (this isn’t a public beta, so Adobe is looking for your feedback and testing results). We, at NAPP, put together a special video on what the requirements are to become an official beta tester, and the link to the video is in the invitation email, should you receive it.”

Apparently no one knows how many invites there are but its said to be in the thousands. NAPP members around the world are being invited—just not all at one time, because of the large pool of eligible beta testers.

Once you’ve completed the forms and agreements, if you’re accepted into the testing program, Adobe will send you a notification email directly with further instructions, and how to download the software. So keep us bookmarked as we should soon have a lot more screenshots and news on this great Abobe CS5 release.

Photoshop CS4 Tip: Moving an image while not losing the Lasso selection

Photoshop CS4 Tip: Moving an image while not losing the Lasso selection

This was one of my favourite tips and i use it all the time in Photoshop. If you’ve zoomed in to use the Lasso tool (short cut key is L). You realise you are running out of window space and need to scroll. Whatever you do, don’t let go of the Lasso tool, simply press the Spacebar and keep holding it. While you hold the spacebar, the cursor turns into the hand cursor enabling you to move the image freely until you have it where you can continue using the Lasso tool, now just let go of the spacebar and your back in lasso mode without losing the selection.

Photoshop CS4 Tip: Changing Lasso Tools

Photoshop CS4 Tip: Changing Lasso Tools

Switching the lasso tools works really well. So try this out. You’re probably asking the question, why do i need to know about it? When you are in the middle of a Photoshop design and you are using the Magnetic Lasso tool, there can be times where you need to use the Polygonal Lasso tool, maybe due to a sudden change in contrast on the background or a shape change. Here is the simple way to change from one to the other. You will need to hold the Alt key for PC or Option key for Mac and click. This will automatically switch you to the Polygonal Lasso tool.

Photoshop CS4 Tip : How to Use notes in Photoshop

Photoshop CS4 Tip : How to Use notes in Photoshop

Photoshop users often miss this little tip. When you are working on an image, its  possible to make notes. You have the option to place sticky notes in an image just by pressing N on the keyboard. When you double-click on the yellow square, it shows the information, really usefal as this is embedded in the image when you save it and the notes are relevenat to the area you are referring to.

When could you use it? Simply whenever you would normally email someone with issues and areas regarding an image. It worth mentioning the notses are not specific to any layer, just the overall image.

How to undo states in Photoshop

How to undo states in Photoshop

Have you ever found that an hour into a project you really wish you had saved earlier on. You then remember you have the undo state button, but find it only remembers the previous 20 states which is nowhere near enough undo’s. Well I’ve been there too. Today’s tip is one that may save your life. (a bit drastic).

It’s also even better to know you can choose how much undo’s the application can provide. To change your History State settings choose:

MAC : Photoshop > Preferences > General

PC: Edit > Preferences > General

You should now notice that there is a Performance option on the left. You can change the History States in this area. Keep in mind though, if you are setting History States to a large number, you are sacrificing performance. If you find that your system is getting really slow, its worth trying to purge the cache when you start working on a new image.

Undo states in Photoshop

In truth you can have up to 1000 History States, but the more states you have, the more memory required by Photoshop and therefore performance can be effected on the ever hungry for ram Photoshop.

As a rule of thumb. If you only work with small files, then 100 states should be supported with 1GB of total RAM. If you work with images from a multi-megapixel still camera, then those 100 states would slow your 1GB system down.

What are people saying about Photoshop CS5?

What are people saying about Photoshop CS5?

#Vcdc says:
With digital cameras as standard, is Adobe prepping Photoshop CS5 with some really cool new tools that takes manipulation to whole new heights and it’s not like the photo editing tools you get as a freebie.

#graphicdesign says:
Dear Adobe, please let my copy/paste/drag/drop layers & objects between Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign be a lot better in CS5.

#Sofia says:
Currently I only have Photoshop CS on my notebook. Nothing to be worried about though since I haven’t discover all the hidden resources in this software yet. As soon as I master this version of Photoshop CS, I would definitely try the latest one; Adobe Photoshop CS5.

#Teach IT says:
I hope Adobe Creative Suite CS5. Please do away with all those plug-ins and think – “They finally got it!” I hope we’ll see a lot more user-friendly WOW-factor stuff built right in to Photoshop CS5, Flash CS5, and Dreamweaver CS5.

#xyliatales says:
I never really got into oils, but I love blending colours digitally. Photoshop CS5’s supposed to better-mimic oil paint blending than oil itself!

Latest CS5 release update

Latest CS5 release update

Latest CS5 release update

2010 CS5 release update

Every so often we like to keep you bang up to date with the news from Adobe and there release dates for Photoshop CS5. As its part of a suite of releases, then we tend to have to make assumptions that it will be ready with the suite (this isnt always the case).

You may hear that CS5 will be out before the end of summer. That’s awfully vague as who knows whether we even get a summer this year! Truth is it was planned for release early 2010. Realiity is that it will now be the summer.
Why is CS5 worth the extra wait?
This site is full of CS5 sneak peeks. We can all guess that Photoshop will gain more 3D and animation capabilities, but what else? In Photoshop CS5, brushes will be a lot more intuitive and realistic – very similar to the way they function in Corel Painter. There is a 3D element to using brushes that will allow you to alter the angle at which a brush is “held” and also the pressure of each brushstroke (in a way that much more closely resembles reality than CS4 brushes). I for one am both excited and skeptical about this function… I’m fostering a new love for digital painting, and am still getting comfortable with the concept, so you can understand my trepidation at having to relearn to use Photoshop brushes. Like all new technology, I suppose it will just take some getting used to.
Taking a deaper look at the Adobe Cs5 suite we also have Flash in CS5. This will aparently be able to create games and interfaces directly for the iPhone, as well have have improved ActionScripting functions, and, of course, changes to the interface. Since I am a bit of a Flash noob, I’ll take this opportunity to link to some content written by Adobe about known problems with Flash CS4, corrections to those problems, and new features to be added here.
Another big change with CS5 is that it will be Intel-compatible only. PowerPC compatability is not being developed for CS5. Adobe seems to have followed Apple’s lead on this change. It’s been speculated that the reason for this change is that if a consumer isn’t hasn’t updated their hardware in over four years (when Apple made the switch), they aren’t likely to change their software, either.
I’ve heard some talk of individuals ditching Adobe Creative Suite, because they only seem to use Photoshop. Of course until there is a definite price list and CS5 release date, then decisions may have to be on hold.
